Kenya has had a tragic National election history especially in the 2007–2008 elections as ethnic divisions flare up because politicians exploit rivalries for increased votes and influence. The youth are the main perpetrators and victims of such violence as they are the most available and misled by the powerful.

Factors such as unemployment and limited education are major contributors leading to vulnerability of the youth.

Inside Africa’s biggest urban slum, the existence of fashion is changing mindsets.

Agnes, a contestant, rocks her dinner wear during the 2021 Mr and Miss Kibera beauty pageant campaigning on peace. Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya.

Among many NGOs campaigning for peace is ‘Amani Kibera,’ a local Community-based Organization works with youth to enhance violence prevention and peace building through education and recreational activities such annual beauty pageants events. This goes beyond the stage as youth pursue to discover and embrace fashion and style as a passion and sometimes as a source of income.
In December 2021, a beauty pageant themed ” Come Let us Reason For Peace” was organized to raise peace awareness. People of all ages from the communities, especially the youth, gather to witness, learn and celebrate about peace. Due to this small strides are made as youth have something to focus on as a way to avoid being targeted by dirty politicians who incite violence to favor their personal ambitions during election seasons.
